Small Talk Six: What are you looking at?

Over at Small Talk Six, today’s topic is “6 things you can do with your body that someone else might find strange” You can answer this with a list of 6 words, 6 phrases, 6 sentences, 6 paragraphs, 6 photos, 6 videos, etc . . .

1. I can touch my nose with my tongue.

2. I can pick things up with my toes. Thank you monkey toes.

3. I can put my foot behind my head. (I'm saying I can, not that it won't hurt like crazy or possibly get stuck.)

4. I can burp on cue. It's what I get for being surrounded by boys 24/7. I am so lady-like.

5. I can always manage to smack my hubby when he's annoying me without even looking. Somehow I always know just where to aim.

6. I can make a super cute kiddo. Okay, maybe not too strange, but I'm all out of ideas here.

Monkey in the Jungle Party

I'm down to only a week before the little one's party, and still have barely anything ready to go. I'm tired, exhausted really, and feel like I should just talk him into going to McD's or the park. If only I hadn't told everyone when it was, I just might do it.

But since ya'll don't want to hear me whine. Here's a little from Little Man's 2nd birthday in 2006.

He was obsessed with monkeys for some reason. So we decided to have a "Monkey in the Jungle" party.

I created invites using a template from Parents magazine. Basically, I cut felt and cardstock in the shape of a banana, glued the bottoms together, and cut the top felt into strips. The details for the party were written on the cardstock, so when the invitee "peeled" the banana they discovered the info.

We went very simple with the food that year, since I knew the majority of my day would be spent chasing kids (and I was a very tired momma from college classes on top of every day life.) So we had pizza, chips, pretzels, and fresh fruit.

For dessert, we had frozen bananas dipped in chocolate (delicious). Plus our two monkey cakes:
Because all the kids there were so young, we didn't have a lot set up for them. We threw a ton of balls into the yard, put out bubbles and ride ons, and created a gorilla bean bag toss. (Hubby painted a huge gorilla and cut out a circle on it's belly and I made bean bags for the kids to throw into it.)
For favors, each child reveived a plush monkey, a barrel of monkeys, some stickers, and a mini box of animal crackers.

It was every monkey-loving, 2 year old's dream come true!

Kellogg's Cinnabon Snack Bars

When my sister was in college, we used to drive out on the weekends to visit her. One of my favorite parts of the trips was stopping at the rest areas along the way. And we always made sure we picked the one with a Cinnabons inside. Those Classic Cinnamon Rolls are amazing.

So, I jumped at the chance to try Kellogg's new Cinnabon Bars. The minute I opened the wrapper, I was met with the smell of cinnamon and brown sugar.
Each box contains 6 delicious bars topped with a drizzle of icing. They taste sweet and satisfying straight from the wrapper, but are amazing warmed up for a few seconds. They were a huge hit with everyone around here. And what's better, I can keep them in the pantry and we don't have to drive an hour or more to get them!

If you haven't tried them yet, you should really check them out the next time you're at the grocery store. I'm going to be picking up a box of the Caramel Cinnabon Bars next time I'm there. Yum!

Big Eye Dummies Review

My 4 year old loves his "animal friends," aka his stuffed animals. He is always excited at the chance to add another to his herd.

Recently, he received a designer plush toy from Big Eye Dummies. Reggie, a gorilla, arrived with 2 sets of interchangeable eyes and mouths. The eyes and mouth were sewn down when he arrived, so that nothing would get lost. But a simple snip of the threads and we were ready to start mixing and matching.
Little Man's reaction:
My son had a blast mixing up Reggie. As soon as he spotted the second set of eyes and mouth, he announced, "Momma, look! You can switch-a-roo!" For two straight hours he changed Reggie in every way imaginable. He ran from one room to another yelling, "A two eyed (or two mouthed, or three eyed) monster is on the loose!"My thoughts:
Reggie is very well made, very withstanding of the rough play my 4 year old put him through. I love that the eyes and mouth attach by magnets instead of velcro (which attracts every stray cat hair in the house).

The only issue we had was when me 4 year old sweetly asked if "the x's [in his eyes] mean he's dead?" Ugh, only my kid. Luckily, that questioned passed quickly, and he was back to playing.

Things That Go Party

I think I should have deemed this party week here at Momma's Gone Over the Wall! I can't help it though, I've got parties on the brain.

For my son's 3rd birthday party, we had a terrible time coming up with a theme. He was obsessed with the movie Cars, monster trucks and construction vehicles. So we came up with "Things that Go" as an all encompassing theme.

To decorate we used vehicles from our toy bins and lots of balloons and streamers.

Lunch consisted of pinwheel sandwiches, fruit and veggies, and macaroni and cheese made with wheel pasta. We also had stoplight cookies and cars and trucks made from jello.

Lightening McQueen and Monster Truck cakes:During the party, I had tons of ride-ons for the kids to play on, a ramp set up for them to race cars, and Cars playing on the tv for anyone who needed a break. We also had a bubble machine set up-which was a huge hit with the little ones.

For favors, each attendee received a few toy cars, car and monster truck fruit snacks, Cars stickers, and a tee (in blue/red or pink/purple). I was amazed at how excited the kids were about the shirts. Almost all of them had asked to wear them home.

An Animal Rescuer Party

I mentioned last week how much I love party planning. I'm still not ready for little man's birthday-in 2 weeks. I'm starting to feel the stress. There are still decorations to make, present to buy, favors to find, a pinata to make, and the list goes on.

But, I thought I'd show you a little from last years party. Our theme was Animal Rescuers-a mix between Bindi the Jungle Girl and Diego.

For lunch we served roll up sandwiches, beef bbq, and sweet and sour meatballs. We had trail mix, chips, and pretzels to munch on, and ice cream, of course.

I'm not a game planner at all. I think it's easier just to put out activities that kids can do as they please. Last year's party was spent playing with our cat, finding treasures in the toy bins, and playing ball in the yard.

When they kid's left, they each got a favor bag containing crayons, a coloring book, stickers, homemade lollipops, animal crackers, and a few other small items. The few older kids who came received animal print notebooks and pens.

All in all, it was a big success. Check back later in the week to see our other themes from years past!

Small Talk Six: Who's Got Talent?

Today’s Small Talk Six topic is what are “6 talents you wish you possessed?”

1. I wish I could dance. I'm so uncoordinated when it comes to things like that, luckily little man doesn't take after me in that area.

2. I'd love to be a contortionist. Seriously, how cool would it be to be able to twist and bend in any direction? And they are always so skinny!

3. I'd love to be able to draw. I've always been so jealous of my brother's artistic talent. I can barely draw a recognizable stick figure.

4. I wish I had the skills to come up with witty comments easily. I have my moments, but usually it takes a lot of thought to get good comebacks.

5. I'd love to be able to cook. Meatloaf and spaghetti gets old. I wish I could easily whip up amazing dinners.

6. I wish I was a good runner. Does that count as a talent? I guess it would. I'd love to lose a few pounds, and I'm sure it would be easier if I was good at running and enjoyed it. Maybe it goes back to the whole coordination thing in #1.

Top 10 Reasons I am Excited to Stay Home with my Family This Coming Weekend

This weekend is a huge event for many, BlogHer '09. Unfortunately, it wasn't a possibility for me this year. Although, I'd love to go next year and meet many of the wonderful ladies I talk to online.
However, Cozi is sponsoring 15 moms who aren't going to BlogHer. We just need to tell them why we're happy to stay at home.

1. Lots of snuggles from my 4 year old. I've never been away from him, so I'm not sure how I'd handle going on a trip by myself.

2. A trip to the county fair on Saturday. Sharing funnel cakes with the hubby. A perfect date night.

3. The chance to sleep in my own bed. I'm partial to sheets I know are clean.

4. Potato picking on Saturday morning. So much more fun than it sounds. 3 kids, lots of dirt, and some fresh potatoes for next week.

5. Napping on Sunday afternoon. I look forward to it every week while hubby hangs out with the little one.

6. Pizza date with my sister Sunday night. Just for fun.

7. Playing in the sandbox with the kiddos. It's a weekly routine to spend hours out there making sand cakes. And it's actually fun.

8. Catching up on my posting and reading my favorite blogs. I feel so much more relaxed when I get things done.

9. Being able to stay in my pjs whenever I want.

10. Have a chance to check out Cozi, a site dedicated to helping you get organized. I could definitely use the help.

Tyson Skillet Creations Review & Giveaway

As a mom, I'm all about meals that are quick and easy. Some days I'm so tired that even using the microwave seems tiring. But I still want to feed my family something healthy and filling.

We had the opportunity to try the Grilled Chicken Fajitas for dinner this week. Hubby and I both enjoyed the meal, and found it very simple to prepare. Just toss the ingredients in a pan and warm the tortillas in the microwave. We added a salad to the meal, and the end result was delicious and filling.
The only thing I noticed was that I had to cook it for longer than the recommended 10 minutes to cook out some of the moisture. I'm not sure if it was the meal or my stove. But after an extra 5 minutes, we were ready to chow down.

Fancy Fortune Cookies Review & Giveaway

Hubby's favorite part of eating Chinese food is the fortune cookies they toss into the bag when we leave. The man loves his fortune cookies. Stuck.

I was so excited today to find the cutest shirt at the thrift store. It was trendy and just my size.

We get home, toss it in the wash, and I decide to try it on. Easily goes over my head, but I notice the sleeves are a little tight. Hmmm, the shoulders are really tight. And with that, I'm stuck.

I tugged and pulled and struggled. And nothing. Still Stuck.

I stood in the bathroom, eying my predicament in the mirror. Tried wiggling, tried anything I could think of. Finally I had to call in hubby. He found it absolutely hilarious.

After a few moments of laughing, he pulled me free, my shoulders aching.

The shirt went straight to the trash.

Birthday Party Bash Review

Recently, 2K Play released Birthday Party Bash, a new game exclusively for the Wii. Birthday Party Bash is described as a "party-in-a-box." But I was still surprised to find 12 invitations, coupons for party supplies, and a party-planning guide inside. It also contains over 20 party games to play on the Wii.

When you start the game, you first need to pick a theme, from pirates or sports to princesses or glamour. Kids even create their own character and characters for all of their guests. Then they can play the games, including sack races, balloon popper, and musical chairs, among many others.
What we thought:
My four year old had a blast playing the games. His favorite was pin the tail on the donkey. He thought it was hilarious to watch and see who could get their tail the closest. (It was usually him!) He also really enjoyed red light green light. He found both games easy to compare to the real life activities, and easily followed the directions.

Hubby was in charge of getting the game ready to play, and got very frustrated trying to synch the remotes. Apparently, it's done a little differently than other games he's played. However, there are clear directions on how to synch them in the instruction booklet. He just "forgot" to read that first.

The Birthday Party Bash would make a great activitiy for a video game lovers birthday or as a fun indoor activity during a party. It's rated E for everyone, and it was enjoyable for both hubby and I and our 4 year old.

Making Life Better & A Free E-Book

MomCentral recently introduced me to Making Life Better. Making Life Better is a website devoted to helping you "feel good, look good and get more out of life." The site is filled with recipes, beauty tips, and parenting information.

I'm impressed with their recipe section, and can't wait to try out some of the Kids in the Kitchen recipes, like the Honey Mustard Chicken Fingers. Yum! I also found the 10 Everyday Beauty Tricks helpful. They are geared towards women in a hurry. Because who has extra time to spend getting ready with kids running around screaming in the morning?

Unilever, the masterminds behind Making Life Better, has teamed up with Jennifer Bushman, author of the "Kitchen Coach" cookbook series to create the ultimate Family Fun Book. The Family Fun Book can be downloaded for free from Making Life Better and is filled with delicious recipes for the whole family. The book promotes togetherness by making cooking together fun.

Party Plannng

Little one's birthday is coming up at the beginning of next month. And I am so unprepared. I am a serious party planner. I used to consider becoming a professional party planner, but somehow I don't think I'd get much business in our little podunk town.

I have 2 1/2 weeks until his party. We have a theme, we have plastic ware, and we have ideas. That's about it.

I ordered invites, or I think I did. No response so far from the company though. I tried shopping for favors, complete failure. The only thing I came home with was a headache.

I really need to get on the ball or our party's going to consist of 10 little kids screaming at me that there's nothing to do. (That's if I ever get the invitations to send to them.)

Why does a 5 year old's party stress me out so bad? (Okay, maybe it's because although I love the planning, deep down I hate hosting parties.)

notNuetral Review

My little man is a picky eater. I know I've mentioned it before. But, we are working hard to find ways around it. I know that I could just not give him a choice, but I hate to make dinner time a battle. So instead, I try to find other ways to liven up his meals.

We recently had the chance to try the Melamine Snack Set from the notNuetral collection at Accent Furniture Direct. It arrived in a very sturdy, reusable box. (Which has been turned into a toy carrier, along with my laundry basket and cloth grocery bags.)
The Melamine Snack Set is made up of a tray, plate, cup, bowl, fork, and spoon. The first thing I noticed is how heavy duty they are. A lot of the little one's bowls end up misshapen after they meet the dishwasher, but the Melamine Set had absolutely no problems and came out unscathed.

The colors are bold and the design fun. I've served little man dinner on the set, and each night, he was excited to use it. The design is perfect for portioning foods. It was funny to watch him use the set, because every time he used the fork or spoon, he would be sure to replace it in the exact same spot on the tray.

The set is BPA-free and meets CPSIA requirements. And apparently, it meets the expectations of my 4 year old too. He announced that his food "tastes better this way." (Meaning off his tray.)

Hot on the Range Book Review

We are avid readers around here. Little one and I go through books like they're going out of style. Our bookshelves are currently overflowing, but we always have room to add another.

At bedtime alone, we read anywhere from 5 to 10 stories together. He is even willing to go to up to bed early if it means we'll have time to sneak in some extra books.

Recently, we had the chance to read Hot on the Range by R.D. Jentsch. Hot on the Range follows the adventures of Chester, a young horse, trying to cool down on a hot Texas day. Throughout the story, Chester's personality really shines through.After reading the book, my son instantly said how much he liked Chester. Chester is so likable, not only because of his ingenuity in the story, but his overall demeanor. He goes through so many trials and tribulations, but he keeps on trying.

My 4 year old's favorite part of the story was when Chester finally managed to cool down. I'm guessing because it's his own favorite way to cool down when he's at grandma's farm. (Using a hose.)

Hot on the Range is a great book for children, especially animal-loving ones like mine. It has an easy to follow story line as well as beautiful illustrations that captivated my son while we were reading. It's a wonderful addition to our bookshelf.

Willow Review

There are certain books that once you start, it's impossible to put down. They evoke such emotion that you have to see how things work out, what happens to the characters.

Willow by Julia Hoban is one of those books. It's powerful, thought-provoking, and at times completely raw. It makes you bounce through emotions alongside the characters.

From the cover:
Seven months ago on a rainy March night, Willow's parents drank too much wine at dinner and asked her to drive them home. But they never made it-Willow lost control of the car, and both of her parents were killed.

Now seventeen, Willow is living with her older brother, who can barely speak to her. She has left behind her old home, friends, and school. But Willow has found a way to survive, to numb the new reality of her life: She is secretly cutting herself.

Willow is a story of loss and love. It's a story of pain, both mental and physical. It's a glimpse into a world many don't understand, and it's so much more than the stereotypes that surround cutting.

Willow shows hope. Through all the despair she faces, all the pain she endures, it shows that there is hope through it all. It shows friendship and understanding. It shows reality, the reality that many teens and young adults face in silence.

I would recommend Willow to parents of teens, to friends and family of people who cut. At times, I found the book almost painful to read, it was so emotional. But that pain came from the reality of the situations. It truly was an amazing read-as a mom, as a daughter, as someone who has lived through the world of cutting.

Good thing he loves me...

Hubby was in the kitchen working on dinner. (I've trained him well.) Suddenly I heard him cursing under his breath, and went out to find out what was going on. Apparently, when cutting up some veggies, he cut his finger. Just a tiny cut, nothing too bad.

Being the good wife, I ran to grab a band-aid and some Neosporin. I started to bandage him up when he started cursing louder, face all screwed up. (Thankfully, little one was already in bed.)

I guess in my rush, I grabbed mint-flavored lip stuff he had in the bathroom cabinet, not Neosporin. Oops! Definitely a good thing he loves me...

Pace Review

Lately we've been trying to get some new foods on the menu around here. Hubby is more than tired of coming home to meatloaf, Shepard's Pie, or chicken casseroles every night.

Recently, we had the chance to try Pace's Pinapple Mango Chipolte Salsa. We used the specialty salsa to make Pace Chicken with Pineapple Mango Salsa. The recipe was simple and quick. All in all it was prepped, cooked, and on the table in under 45 minutes.

Hubby and I both enjoyed the new meal. We paired the chicken with cornbread muffins and a salad. The chicken, topped with salsa, was a perfect mix of freshness and spice. It will definitely be making it's way into our meal rotation.

Pace's specialty salsas are offered in 6 other varieties: Black Bean & Roasted Corn, Triple Pepper, Tequila Lime, Mexican 4-Cheese, Salsa Verde, and Pico de Gallo.

Got Milk?

I live in a household where running out of milk is an absolutely tragic. The second someone uses the end of the jug, you can be sure little man will request a cup of it.

I'm happy with his love for milk. He'll take it anyway he can get it: plain, chocolate, or strawberry. With his picky eating habit, I love that milk provides calcium and protein, as well as various vitamins and minerals. Mom Central has teamed up with the Milk Council to get the word out about Why Milk? The site features celeb milk mustaches, tips and tools to live well, and recipes. We tried out the Blueberry Blast Smoothie (with fresh berries since we have way too many), and it was delicious. It gained two thumbs up all around in our house.

Milk is also one of the most cost efficient summer snack choices-at 25 cents a cup. It's been found to provide more nutrition per cent than almost any other drink choice. Since studies show 92% of moms are looking for more nutritionally sound snack choices, milk should definitely be a staple for snack time.

Small Talk Six: I'm a Rock Star

Today’s topic is “6 things you think would be great about being a rockstar (or just famous in general).” You can answer this with a list of 6 words, 6 phrases, 6 sentences, 6 paragraphs, 6 photos, 6 videos, etc . . .

1. I could build the house of my dreams and an amazing custom playhouse for the little one.

2. I could hire a maid and a cook. Since cleaning and cooking are the two worst parts of my day. And a personal grocery shopper too. Hate the grocery store.

3. I could have someone do all my clothes shopping too and be able to alter clothes to fit me in the best possible way.

4. I could get a little work done on this post-kiddo belly. A little tuck wouldn't hurt in the least.

5. My son would be so excited to see me on stage. Maybe I'd even get the same shrill-screaming enthusiasm he shows Hannah Montana. (Every time he sees her on tv.)

6. Hubby wouldn't have to work. We could spend time lounging as a family at our house and showing our little one amazing places around the world.

Hmm, to be a rock star, do I need to know how to sing? That could be a problem...But it sounds so nice!

Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters

We are big snackers in our house. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. But it seems that, especially in the summer, we graze on little things off and on during the day, instead of having a big meal.

We recently had the chance to try Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters. The first day they arrived, hubby stole the bag of Almond Nut Clusters to take for a snack at work. He came home empty handed. They were that good. (I, on the other hand, am partial to the Roasted Cashew Nut Clusters. Yum!)Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters are a combination of nuts, granola, and a little honey. They are salty and sweet all at once, and are a perfect snack when you can't put your finger on exactly what you're hungry for. (Shh..don't tell: I'm eating some now.)

They come in 4 flavors: Roasted Cashew, Nut Lovers, Roasted Almond, and Honey Roasted Peanut. All of which we really enjoyed. Well, hubby was the only one to enjoy Almond, because apparently he can't share well with others.

Some Days...

Some days I can't stand my hubby.

I go to work, and come home to find new additions to our house.
Once it was a turtle. I made him put it back where he found it.
Then it was gerbils. We all know how well that's going.
Yesterday, a kitten.
Somehow I don't think it just followed him home.
I almost bought the stray story. Until a 4 year old outed him.
Momma, we saw a sign that said: Free kittens...

When we grow old, if he out lives me, I just know he's going to be one of those crazy people with 14,876 cats climbing through the house.

My Imagination

Little one and I are still fighting over that mirror and comb. I think he's trying to drive me insane.

I finally had to hide all the hair care products. (Especially after I caught him smelling shampoo bottles in his bed.)

I don't know what his obsession with hair care stuff is lately, but it'll definitely make for some embarrassing stories down the road.

Tonight at bedtime, he asked if he could have his mirror. I said no, I didn't know where it was.

His response, Well, I still have my imagination. You can't take that away, can you?

What am I going to do with little Mr Smartypants? He can be too smart for his own good sometimes.
