Treasures Reader Giveaway

We are bookworms in this house. The little one and I spend quite a bit of our day reading together. Even on the busiest of days, we reserve at least 30 minutes to share a good book with each other.

With summer starting, our days will get longer and we'll be outside more often. But it's still important to us to find time to read.

Dr. Tim Shanahan, author of Macmillan/McGraw-Hill's best-selling elementary reading program, Treasures, and former president of the International Reading Association, has compiled some helpful summer reading tips.
  • Read together: Children learn a lot when you read to them. Ask questions, answer questions and explore the ideas together.
  • Share the experience: As kids get older, help them find books, magazines, or newspaper articles that they would enjoy reading. Take the time to read them too so you can discuss them.
  • Ask questions: Talk to your children about what they are reading. Ask them what happened in the story or what might happen next, who is their favorite character, or who is the villain.
  • Find reading opportunities everywhere: If you are taking a trip this summer, send for brochures and maps and have your children read them aloud with you.
  • Plan an outcome activity: Plan an outcome event or activity based on the reading. If the book has been made into a movie, watch the DVD together after reading the book. Book reading can lead to picnics, museum visits, ballgames or even family vacations.
  • Mix it up: Don’t just focus on storybooks. Kids often prefer to read about fact rather than fiction, including books and articles about the environment, animals, current events, sports, and other topics. Talk to them about what they like and help them find reading materials that match those interests.

Would you like to win?
Macmillan/McGraw-Hill is offering one lucky reader a series of 3 readers from the Treasures program (specific to your child's age, may vary from images).

Weekly visits to the library keeps them reading! We even go to the thrift stores in search for books!
They have so much fun!

We've read to her since she was a baby so she's grown up with a love for reading. My parents give her books every month in a care package so we have quiet the private library for her.

I have gotten my son(who hated to read) to pick out books by doing books on tape. His problem is sitting still ...so with this he is more in control of the pages or can listen from afar.

I have always shared my love of reading with my kids. No matter what style of book they choose, I always read the book also so we can talk about it.

My kids both love the Erex Rex books, they are by a local author here in southern Ohio.

Wow how cool is that! I love books and free books are even better. Right now it is really easy to get my little guy to read. All I have to do is put his basket of books on the floor and he will either pick one up and 'read' to himself or bring it to me to read to him. Cute is a 17month old reading to you ;)

We read ourselves a lot and have sessions where everyone finds themselves reading. Not by force it just happens.

We make sure to read to the kids before their naps and at bedtime. Lately my daughter has been loving the Frog and Toad stories.

It really doesn't take much at all to get our kids reading. They both love it. We read to them every night before bedtime and also throughout the day, just for fun.
